CHSAA to Induct Mike O’Donnell
White Plains- On Thursday May 1st, The Catholic High Schools Athletic Association will induct the Class of 2008 into their Hall of Fame. Mike O’Donnell, athletic Director and varsity football coach at Stepinac High school, will be inducted along with Bernie Mahoney (Iona Prep & Mt. St. Michael), Kevin Buckley (Kellenberg), George Dlugolonski (Chaminade), Don Green (Molloy), John Kehoe (Baseball Umpire), and Jack Phelan (Holy Trinity).
Mike, a graduate of Blessed Sacrament High School in New Rochelle, has been associated with Archbishop Stepinac High School since the fall of 1980, when he joined the football staff of Billy Kane. Two years later, CHSAA Hall of Famer Gene Doris asked him to coach Stepinac’s freshman basketball team.
In 1988, Mike became Stepinac’s sixth head football coach succeeding Bernie Connolly. In his 20 years as head coach Stepinac has won two division titles, two league championships and proudly watched numerous student-athletes go on to play football at the collegiate level. In the spring of 2006, once again Mike was called upon to fill another position at Stepinac. Mike assumed the roles of Athletic Director and chairman of the Physical Education department, following in the footsteps of CHSAA Hall of Famers Fr. Joseph McGann and Don Larkin.
Over the twenty-eight years that Mike has been associated with Stepinac, this year might be his proudest. Not only did Stepinac win the CHSFL AA Championship, but Stepinac recorded the most wins in a single season in school history (ten) and this is the first time that Stepinac has in its possession the League Trophy, the Dubois Trophy (Hayes) and the Turkey Bowl Trophy (White Plains) all in the same year.
Mike was selected Daily News coach of the year in 1993, ’95 and ’97. He is a member of the C.H.S.F.L. Board of Governors and a recipient of the Cardinal O’Connor Service Award bestowed to him at the Stepinac Hall of Fame Induction ceremony.
The induction ceremony is held in conjunction with a golf outing at 12:00, induction ceremony dinner immediately following golf. All events will be held at the Canyon Club in Armonk.
