Mariners recall Yonkers native SweeneyJUNE 16, 2010
Yonkers native Brian Sweeney is getting another shot at the majors after a stint in Japan. The Seattle Mariners on Tuesday recalled the right-hander, who signed as a minor-league free agent on April 16. Sweeney, who turned 36 on Sunday, was 2-1 with a 2.51 ERA in 28 2/3 innings of relief at Triple-A Tacoma, with 32 strikeouts and eight walks. He had spent the last three seasons playing in Japan for the Nippon Ham-Fighters. Sweeney last pitched in the major leagues with the San Diego Padres in 2006. Sweeney originally signed with Seattle as a minor-league free agent in 1996. Prior to that, he starred at Stepinac High and Mercy College. |
